How to Get Alcona County Birth Records
There are two main ways to request a birth certificate from the Alcona County Clerk. You can go in person to the office in Harrisville, or you can mail a completed request. In-person requests are usually handled in five to ten minutes. Mail requests take one to three business days once the office receives them.
For a mail request, you must complete the application form. The form asks for the full name at birth, date of birth, names of both parents, the place of birth, a return address, and a phone number. You also need to include a copy of your government-issued photo ID. Send everything to P.O. Box 308, Harrisville, MI 48740. An online application form is available for download from the county website. Make your check or money order payable to the Alcona County Clerk. Non-refundable search fees apply even if no record is found.
You can also order Michigan birth certificates through the state. The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services accepts mail orders and offers online ordering through VitalChek. State-level orders go to MDHHS Vital Records in Lansing rather than the county clerk.
Note: Your request must include a copy of a valid photo ID. Mail requests without proper ID will not be processed.
The Michigan MDHHS Vital Records office provides guidance on ordering records at the state level, as shown on their official site.

Who Can Request Alcona County Birth Records
Birth records in Alcona County are restricted. They are not open to the general public. Michigan law limits access to protect privacy. Under MCL 333.2882, a certified copy of a birth certificate may only be issued to the person named on the record, a parent listed on the certificate, a legal guardian, or an authorized legal representative.
If you are requesting a record for someone other than yourself or your child, you will need to show legal authority. That could mean a court order, a power of attorney, or proof of guardianship. The clerk's office reviews each request before issuing any copies. Records that are 100 years old or older become public record and can be accessed by anyone.
Alcona County Birth Record Fees
The Alcona County Clerk charges $12 for the first certified copy of a birth record. Each additional copy of the same record costs $5 if requested at the same time. A non-certified copy costs $1, but only eligible persons may receive it. These fees cover the search and processing. They are non-refundable regardless of whether a record is found.
Payment must be made by check or money order for mail requests. Make it payable to the Alcona County Clerk. For in-person requests, ask the office what forms of payment they accept. Do not send cash through the mail.
Note: Additional copies of the same certificate cost $5 each only when ordered at the same time as the first copy.
Michigan State Birth Records Resources
For births that took place in Alcona County, both the county clerk and the Michigan state office may have a copy. The state maintains its own set of vital records through MDHHS Vital Records. You can order online through the state's online ordering portal or VitalChek. State orders may have different fees and processing times than county orders.
The Michigan Genealogical Council and other research groups have digitized some older records. The Family History Library has microfilm for Alcona County births from 1906 through the 1930s. For records before 1900, church baptism records may be more reliable since some early births were not formally registered with the county.
If you are searching for historical birth data and need to locate older documents, the state archives in Lansing can help. The law governing what the state may release is found at MCL 333.2813, which defines who is considered a registrant and what rights they hold.
