Who May Request a Marquette County Birth Record

Marquette County follows Michigan's statewide eligibility rules. Under MCL 333.2882, birth records less than 100 years old are restricted to the registrant, their parents or legal guardian, their children, their grandchildren, or an authorized legal representative. You must show valid photo ID confirming your identity and your relationship to the person on the certificate.

Seniors age 65 or older requesting their own birth record may qualify for a reduced fee, but must appear in person at the clerk's office to take advantage of that rate. For all other request methods, standard fees apply.

Records 100 years old or older are publicly accessible. Researchers working with historical Marquette County birth records from the late 1800s and early 1900s can request those records without needing to prove a family relationship. Under MCL 333.2891, the state sets access rules for all Michigan birth records, and Marquette County follows those standards.

Note: If you email a photo of your ID as part of a phone request, make sure the image clearly shows your full name, photo, and expiration date.

Marquette County Birth Certificate Fees

The Marquette County Clerk charges $14 for the first certified copy of a birth certificate. Each additional copy of the same record ordered at the same time costs $7. These fees are set under MCL 333.2888.

Marquette County offers a reduced rate for residents age 65 and older who are requesting their own birth certificate in person. The senior fee is $6 for the first copy and $4 for each additional copy at the same time. This discount applies only to in-person requests at the clerk's office. It does not apply to mail or phone orders.

The state MDHHS office charges $34 for the first copy, significantly higher than the county rate. If you order through VitalChek, you pay the base fee plus a service charge. Ordering directly from the Marquette County Clerk is the most cost-effective option. Make checks payable to Marquette County Clerk. Do not mail cash.
